PRIME MINISTER Kassim Majaliwa has instructed standards control institutions in the country to ensure that the production of all products, including health products, meets the required quality and is able to compete in international markets.
He issued the order today (Thursday, March 20, 2025) after laying the foundation stone for the construction of oxygen generating plants for hospital use, stressing that the market should have safe, quality, and internationally accepted products. The plants are being built at the TOL Gases offices, Temeke, Dar es Salaam.
He said that when the project is completed, it will produce 4.1 million liters of medical oxygen per year starting in 2026. "This step will improve the availability of oxygen in hospitals and health centers, as well as reduce the cost of medical oxygen by 35 percent in hospitals and health centers across the country, thus enhancing health services for citizens."
In addition, the Prime Minister said this project supports the Government's ongoing efforts to ensure that oxygen for medical purposes is readily available at every health care facility in the country.
For his part, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Godfrey Mollel said the project is important because the oxygen produced in this way has high quality standards, thus it will help strengthen health services provided in the country as well as reduce deaths.
"This project will increase the availability of oxygen in hospitals and clinics in the country and reduce deaths from respiratory diseases, including reducing maternal mortality and saving the lives of children in this nation."
